Volunteers dressed in Dinosaur Costume Reading to a group of studentsAt Joy James Elementary learning is a joyful experience and that was evident as they hosted the first annual Trunk and Read event.

On October 30th, Joy James hosted the local Police Department, Fire Department, Good News Club members, Fellowship Church Pastor Jonas Bohlin, and parent volunteers. Each volunteer decorated the trunks of their car to match a festive Fall or Halloween children’s book. The volunteers read their stories to students, who listened in their creative costumes. After reading the stories, volunteers passed out loads of treats donated by JJE parents. The joy and excitement of the books and enthusiasm coming from the volunteers was contagious.

The event was completed with a fall themed writing opportunity. Students used vocabulary, ideas and themes in a creative writing activity. They were excited to use all the new words in their writing, which was then showcased throughout the school.

This event combined fun, academics, community involvement, and the love of reading all together in one “spooktacular” event! Everyone is looking forward to next year.
